A man decides to buy a nice horse.  He pays $60 for it, and he is very happy with the deal.  After a year, the value of the horse has increased to $70 and he decides to sell it.  But after a few days he regrets his decision to sell the horse; so he buys it again.  Unfortunately he has to pay $80 to get it back, so he loses $10.  After another year of owning the horse, he again decides to sell the horse for $90.  Did he make a profit or have a loss, and how much?

There is a room that contains a lamp with a light bulb.  Outside the room there are three switches, but only one switch is connected to the lamp.  All switches are presently in the 'off'' position and consequently, the bulb is not lit.  How can you determine which of the three switches controls the lamp, when you can't see into the room from the outside and you can only go inside the room one time?

Two convicts are locked in a cell.  There is an unbarred window high up in the cell, but it doesn't matter if they stand on the bed or one on top of the other they can't reach the window to escape.  They then realize that they could tunnel out.  They start, but soon give up with the tunneling because it will take too long.  Finally one of the convicts figures out how to escape from the cell.  What is his plan?

There are 4 people that need to walk across a bridge in the middle of the night.  The bridge will only hold a maximum of 2 people at a time and each time the bridge is crossed a flashlight is needed to guide the way.  The 4 people only have 1 flashlight.  They are late for an appointment and all 4 people must be on the other side of the bridge in 17 minutes.  To make things even more difficult, each person has a different walking rate.  One person can cross the bridge in 1 minute, another person can cross the bridge in 2 minutes, another in 5 minutes and the last one in 10 minutes.  How do all 4 people get across the bridge in 17 minutes using 1 flashlight.

A man wants to marry the evil king's daughter.  The evil king, of course, doesn't like the man and devises a test to foil the marriage.  He tells the man that he will put 2 folded slips of paper into a hat.  On one slip he will write the word "death" and the other slip he will will write the word "marriage."  The man is to take one of the slips of paper out of the hat to determine what his fate will be.  Because the king is evil and doesn't want him to marry his daughter, the man knows that he will cheat and put 2 slips of paper into the hat labeled "death."  Although the man knows that he may be killed, he agrees to the terms and in a few days marries the king's daughter.  How did he outsmart the king?
