* More on this riddle:
Which one of the following does not belong?
Chess Bridge Go Mah-Jongg Backgammon
* ANSWER: Bridge;these are games and Bridge is the
only game that does not use game pieces or tiles.))
--From Grant: I would have you know Go isn't luck!
It is a game where you place pieces on a board and
surround your opponent -- remember?
My answer is Chess. All the other games have a random
factor of rolling dice, dealing cards or tiles, or
spinning a pointer (can't remember if "GO" is dice or spinner).
Chess has no luck factor.
* Regarding the red/white cards riddle last week - we have
received lots of mail on this one and as a result have
had some rather interesting "discussions" around here about
probability and odds and so forth!
Dante writes: Sorry, but I've got to argue this one. The answer is actually 1/2, and here's why.
If I draw one card out and place it face up on the table
and see a red top, then I *KNOW* that the card I picked
is NOT the double-white card. So, there is an equal chance that I pulled out the red-white vs. the red-red card.
Consider this similar problem-
I have three plastic eggs in a bag, one is white with a
white candy inside, one is red with a white candy inside
and one is red with a red candy inside.
I pull out a red egg. What are the odds that it has a
red candy inside.
Since you pull out a red egg, then the white egg isn't
included in the equation, since you could NOT have pulled
it out. Therefore you had two choices, and a 1/2 likelihood.
In your example, we draw a card at random, but determine
that one side is red. This disqualifies the double-white
card the same way as if we hadn't picked it in the first place, therefore unaffecting the outcome.
Bob writes:
Your answer of "2 out of 3" for the question involving 3 cards in a hat,was incorrect:
If the card pulled out of the hat is red, facing up,
there are only two possibilities for the downward side of the card.
It will either be the all red card and be red, or it will be the red/white card and be white.
The 3rd red side of a card is the one already facing upwards and is not a possibility when the card is turned over.
The correct answer is one out of two, or 50%.
David writes:
Re the cards in the hat: Wrong. There are only two cards
that have at least one red side. You have picked one of them.
One has the other side red, the other has the other side white.
So the odds are 50/50.
Think about it this way:
Card 1: White/White
Card 2: Red/White
Card 3: Red/Red
Since the card you have picked has its up side red, it must be either
card 2 or card 3.
If it is card 2, then the other side is white. If it is card 3, then
the other side is red.
Therefore your odds are 1 out of 2.
NOTE: I still maintain that my answer - 2 out of 3 is correct.
There are 3 opportunities to get a red sided card. You have
one of them, 2 are left. I'm working on a more convincing argument
for this one and will let you know next issue.
