Mental Magic
Here's a magic trick we hope you'll like. You can
even copy it and try it out on your friends.
Simply follow the step-by-step directions. Even though many of
them offer you a choice of what to do, we're feeling confident in
our crystal ball's power to foretell the future. Go ahead, give
it a try!
1. Place a mental marker on any one of the numbered spots in the
grid below.
2. Move one space to the left or right--your choice.
3. Move one space up or down--your choice.
4. Move one space to the right, if possible; otherwise, move one
space left.
5. Move one space down, if possible; otherwise, move one space
up.
6. If your spot is in the left column (1, 4, 7), move it one
space to the right; if it's in the middle column (2, 5, 8), move
it one space to the left; if it's in the right column (3, 6, 9),
don't move it.

7. If your spot is in the top row (1, 2, 3), move it one space
down; if it's in the middle row (4, 5, 6), move it one space up;
if it's in the bottom row (7, 8, 9), don't move it.

9. Move one space up or down--your choice.
10. Move one space to the left, if possible; otherwise, move one
space to the right.
11. Move one space down, if possible; otherwise, move one space
up.
